Hollywood celebs often fall in love with their co-stars and end up in marriages, but most of these unions don't stand the test of time and end up in divorce. However, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have done things differently. They've been in a relationship for 37 years but never made it official. Why?
1. The Unconventional Hollywood Couple
Since getting together in 1983, Goldie and Kurt have stayed faithful to each other but have overcome temptations, too. Goldie once said, "Monogamy is a very tough order. You are attracted to other people, potentially, you have fantasies about that." However, the couple managed to focus on the positives and have stayed strong for so many years, and the secret lies in their life stories.
2. First Met In The Swinging Sixties
Goldie and Kurt first laid eyes on one another in 1968, when they were cast in Walt Disney's Original Family Band. The two youngsters respected each other but never thought of getting romantically involved, as they were both focused on careers and their 6-year age gap was simply too much at that time. So after the film, the 21-year-old Goldie and teen Kurt went their separate ways.
3. Hawn's Rises To Stardom
Though the Disney film was a failure, it helped Goldie catch the eye of more directors. She soon got parts in bigger movies, including 1969's Cactus Flower that won her a Golden Globe and an Oscar. The same year, Goldie married dancer Gus Trikonis. In the 70s, Goldie's career kept going from strength to strength, and she even hosted two TV specials and released a country music album. Meanwhile, however, Kurt's career was moving at a snail's pace.
4. Russell Gained Attention As Snake
Kurt barely survived by playing small roles in TV shows and films. He began to move up the career ladder when he got his breakout role as the King of Rock and Roll in 1979's Elvis. But it wasn't until he portrayed Snake Plissken in 1981's Escape From New York that Kurt finally gained the attention of film directors. Besides, Kurt was the subject of a baffling Disney mystery.
5. A Mystery Left Unsolved For 54 Years
When Walt Disney passed away in 1966, the last words he wrote down on a piece of paper were "Kurt Russell." At that time, Kurt was just a young boy of 15 years old and had just begun working for Walt's studio. Nobody knew why Walt wrote Kurt's name. When asked about it, Kurt replied, "Oh gee, I don't know what it's connected to."
6. Both Stars Found Their Own Loves
After 7 years together, Goldie and husband Trikonis divorced in 1976, but she soon found love again. The actress married musician Bill Hudson and gave birth to two children, Oliver and Kate. Kurt also found love, marrying Elvis co-star Season Hubley in 1979, and they shared a son, Boston. At that point, neither of them could have predicted that their marriages wouldn't last.
7. Both Stars Were Single Again
In 1980, Goldie ended her second marriage of 4 years, and 3 years later, Kurt divorced Season. Both stars were then single, yet still, they didn't see any romantic possibility, and both threw themselves into their work. It wasn't until they both auditioned for roles in the film Swing Shift that their chemistry began to flow.
8. The Shift That Started It All
While reading for roles in Swing Shift, Goldie and Kurt found themselves in the same room. This time, the sparks flew between them, and their evident chemistry finally led the producers to cast them as the leading man and woman. Both in their thirties and having had failed marriages, Kurt decided to seize the opportunity and asked Goldie out on a date. Unexpectedly, their first date was rather interesting.
9. Their First Date Involved The Police
Their first date began normally, with a trip to the cinema and then to a club for hours of drinking and dancing. With both not wanting to end the evening, Goldie brought Kurt back to her house. Interestingly, when they arrived at the front door, Goldie suddenly realized that her house was being renovated and that she didn't have the key. A bit out of their minds, the two Hollywood stars broke into the house ineptly, and soon after, they heard police sirens.
10. Kurt Recalled Their Fun Date
Obviously, someone had seen them and considered them burglars, so 911 was called. Goldie had to show the police proof of ownership, and the couple concluded their incredible date in a hotel. More romantically, their first date took place on St. Valentine's Day. When recalling the evening, Kurt said, "It was a lot of fun, I'll tell you what. I can't believe it was a long time ago." The pair has since continued to have lots of fun together.
11. Husband, Wife, And Loving Parents
When the couple decided to date seriously, they had to consider the feelings of their own children. Both wanted their kids to feel easy about living in a new family dynamic. Luckily, the three children - Oliver, Kate, and Boston - lived happily together. In 1986, Goldie and Kurt welcomed their son, Wyatt, into the family, and the four children formed a close bond.
12. Like Mother, Like Daughter
Three of the four kids - Oliver, Kate, and Wyatt - followed in their parents' footsteps to become actors, while Boston worked behind the screen. The most successful child is definitely Kate. A spitting image of her mother, Kate struck it big after starring in movies like Almost Famous. She is also a successful business owner, launching her own fitness brand, Fabletics.
13. Kate Looks Upon Kurt As Real Father
Besides acting and running a business, Kate juggles writing books, being a mother and a girlfriend. With so much on her plate, Kate still managed to rise to challenges each time. That's greatly thanks to the support from her stepfather, Kurt, who has been in her life since she was 18 months old. Kate looks upon Kurt as her real father and speaks highly of him, saying, "He is so honest, so brutally honest. I love him so much; he is just a great guy."
14. Kate And Oliver's Relationship With Their Biological Father
It's never easy to raise another man's child, but Kurt accepted both Goldie's children as his own and has worked hard to form a close bond with them. Both Kate and Oliver are grateful for Kurt's love, but their relationship with their biological father, Bill Hudson, is rather strained. On 2015's Father's Day, Oliver posted a photo of him and Kate with their father Bill, captioning "Happy abandonment day," and Bill furiously retaliated.
15. "My Son Is Dead to Me"
Bill vocally criticized Goldie's "poisoning" of his children and making them resent him. He also claimed that Oliver's post was "a malicious, vicious, premeditated attack." Bill continued to declare that his son was "dead to me now. As is Kate… I am mourning their loss even though they are still walking this earth." He even asked them to stop using his surname.
16. Kate And Oliver Owe It All To Goldie
Both Kate and Oliver speak fondly of their mother, Goldie, who is Jewish and practices meditation every day. They said Goldie has shared her faith in Buddhism and meditation with them and instilled them vital family values since a young age. Their mother's positivity and life lessons have profoundly impacted their lives and made them what they are today.
17. Enjoy Being Grandparents
Now all the children are adults, with Oliver and Kate having 3 children of their own and Wyatt expecting his first, Goldie and Kurt revel in being grandparents. As Boston keeps his personal life away from the media, we don't know if he is married or has children or not. Anyway, it's already a big family that can keep the couple busy, but they still managed to act together on screen.
18. Partners In Life And On The Screen
In the early years of their career, Goldie and Kurt had worked together on a couple of films, but most of them weren't successful. They scored the first win as an onscreen couple in 1987's comedy Overboard, which made $27 million at the box office. Sadly, the following 30 years didn't see any reunion of the couple on screen until 2017.
19. Santa Claus And Mrs. Claus
In 2017, Kurt was cast as Santa Claus in The Christmas Chronicles, and Goldie as Mrs. Claus. Though Goldie appeared minimally in the movie, Kurt still thought fondly of the experience. He explained later why he accepted that role, saying, "Santa is the centerpiece of Christmas, it is the one time of the year that we are all able to get together for a good, long period of time, and have all of the things that all families have."
20. Enjoy Freedom As Individuals
Over the years, the couple have worked hard to form trust, unity, and a solid bond; meanwhile, they have also focused on themselves as individuals. They have separate sections in their house, so they can be alone and enjoy freedom when needed. Besides, the couple enjoy their own interests without the other's involvement. Kurt loves hunting, while Goldie prefers yoga and meditation.
21. Both Stars Earned Their Own Stars
In 2017, Goldie and Kurt were both given their own stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and their stars were put next to each other. It's pretty rare for both parties in a couple to win a star. In the ceremony, the couple of 37 years walked arm in arm down Hollywood Boulevard, with their children by their side, watching them receive their awards. It was a very touching scene.
22. So Why Did They Not Get Married?
For 37 years, Goldie and Kurt have remained committed to one another, but they have never felt the need to get married. Having seen so many failed marriages, the couple believed that a marriage certificate wouldn't work between them, and Goldie even admitted that they would be "long divorced" if they had tied the knot.
23. No Need For Nuptials
Goldie explained in an interview, saying, "There's something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other. For me, I chose to stay. Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice." The couple have proven that trust, loyalty, and love help nourish an unbreakable bond, even without a nuptial.
